Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Areas are a big deal in the Barstow area. You can use Barstow as your base while enjoying the thousands of acres available for the operation of your ATV or motorcycle. There are plenty of Barstow hotels for your convenience. We have added several of the popular areas; Stoddard Valley, Rasor, Dumont Dunes, Johnson Valley, and El Mirage/Shadow Mountains. If you know of a nearby area that should be included on this list, please send us an e-mail. While in the area, you can spend some time for hiking, rock hounding, and plant, bird and wildlife watching. The desert tortoise are found within the riding areas. It is also on the state and federal listed threatened species list. Please do not handle or disturb these animals.


Barstow CA Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Areas

Camping is usually allowed anywhere within the riding areas that does not block travel on a road and is limited to 14 days. Please see the rules and regulations listed below for your benefit. When coming to one of these areas, be prepared because you are in isolated areas. Extremes of heat and cold are likely in this area! Rescue in the area is not immediate! Be careful and enjoy the remote and quiet nature of the area. There are also deep open mine shafts in the riding area that have Danger signs.

Stoddard Valley - 5,000 acres of open area.

Located between Victorville and 8 miles south of Barstow .

The triangular-shaped riding area is formed by Interstate 15 and California Highway 247 (Barstow Road), immediately south of Barstow. Many visitors enter the area to the east, off Interstate 15 at the Outlet Center Drive Exit (Sidewinder Road) or at the Hodge Road Exit, to the south on I-15. All entrances are dirt roads. Most area visitors ride motorcycles or ATVs, or tour the area in four-wheel drive vehicles through the rolling hills, steep mountains, open valleys.

Rasor - 22,500 acres of designated open area.
Located 45 miles northwest of Barstow on Rasor Road. The area has sand washes and dunes, mesquite thickets.

The riding area is located between Interstate 15 and the Mojave National Preserve, about 25 miles southwest of Baker . Access roads are Basin Road and Rasor Road east of the I-15. Both of these roads are graded dirt roads.

Most visitors ride motorcycles or ATVs, drive sand rails or tour the area in four-wheel drive vehicles. The easily accessed areas off the Rasor Road exit are used extensively for OHV and sand rail staging and play. Due to the remoteness of the area, there have been no requests for competitive event permits, leaving this area exclusively for casual riders
NOTE: There are many deep mine shafts in the riding area! Please be careful and watch for signs!


Dumont Dunes - East of Barstow on Hwy 15 to Baker - 8,150 acres of open area.

Located 30 miles. north of Baker on Hwy 127, off Dumont Dunes Rd. The area has steep and tall sand dunes.

Johnson Valley - South of Barstow -  140,000 acres of open area.

Located 15 miles east of Lucerne Valley on Hwy 247. The area has steep mountains, rolling hills, open valley, dry lake beds, and sand dunes.

The riding area can be entered from Highway 247 at Old Woman Springs Road or Camp Rock Road, 55 miles southeast of Barstow. Most visitors access the area off Camp Rock Road by driving north off of Highway 247.

Most visitors tour the area in four-wheel drive vehicles. The area near Anderson Dry Lake and Soggy Dry Lakes is used extensively for competitive racing events and OHV free play.  The eastern boundary is shared with the Twenty-nine Palms Marine Air-Ground Combat Center. DO NOT enter this area.


El Mirage/Shadow Mountains - south of Barstow - located 10 miles west of Adelanto. 24,000 acres
of area
This area is located in the Mojave Desert on the western edge of San Bernardino County near the Los Angeles County
Line. The areas of interest include El Mirage Dry Lakebed, the Shadow Mountains, El Mirage Basin, and the Twin Hills area. 
Differences in  elevations range from about 2,800 feet at the El Mirage Dry Lake to more than 3,800 feet in the Shadow
Mountains.

Each vehicle driven into the area will be required to have a special recreation permit. A separate permit is NOT required for any vehicles towed into the area. However, if a towed vehicle is later driven in or out of the area a permit will be required.

Effective October 1, 2008, The permits are:

$15 for a one day permit, valid from dawn to dusk
$30 for a weekly permit, valid for 7 days
$90 for an annual permit, valid from October 1, 2008 - September 30, 2009
Permits will be available for sale on-site.


OHV Area Rules and Regulations:

  • Camping is allowed anywhere within the riding area that does not block travel on a road. Camping is limited to a 14 day stay.
  • All vehicles must have a muffler or spark arrester and have either a street-legal license or be registered as an off-highway vehicle.
  • Vehicles being operated at night must have head and tail lights.
  • Helmets are required on all ATVs! There are no passengers allowed on ATVs.
  • No pistol or rifle shooting allowed! Shotguns are allowed during hunting season!
  • Draining of holding tanks, littering and trash dumping is prohibited. Pack out what ever you pack in!
  • Digging up or destroying trees and shrubs or harassing wildlife or livestock is prohibited.
  • The desert tortoise is a federally protected species. Please do not handle or disturb these animals; Look but don't Touch!
  • It is illegal to damage or destroy archeological sites or remove artifacts.
  • Possession or use of any glass container, empty or not, used for carrying any liquid for drinking purposes is prohibited.

  • Possession or use of pallets or wood containing nails, screws or metal hardware is prohibited
